My very first car crash...almost 4 months ago, and I am still nervous.

by Shannon
(Washington)

On May 24th I had just pulled out from a gas station into a busy intersection. A driver was pulling out across the street from me and turned into the left turn lane. She realized she wanted to go straight and before looking to see if anyone was next to her she just pulled right over. She hit me in the left drivers side front corner panel. She didn't even slow down until a few seconds later resulting in me being pushed across a couple lanes of traffic.

I was only 17 years old and had my still new to me 2004 Kia Optima. My sister was luckily driving behind me so I had assistance. About a week later I was admitted to the local children's hospital for unexplained stomach pains and I couldn't hold down food or water. We finally came to the conclusion that my body was in shock after my car accident and not being treated or realizing it made the symptoms that much worse. Not to mention the medication they put me on for my bruised ribs conflicted with my stomach problems.

About 2 weeks after I got out of the hospital my therapist diagnosed me with PTSD. From the car accident and the hospital stay.

To this day I will be driving my car I still have my Kia luckily. down the road and I am constantly scared someone is going to just switch lanes and hit me. If I see someone slightly swerving over or just turning on their turn signal I end up slamming on the breaks and panicking, which in dangerous to do! I am constantly nervous and shaky behind the wheel on main roads. Usually only on roads with 2 or more lanes of traffic going the same direction.

I am slowly recovering and working with my therapist to this day and just want everyone to know that you are never alone with PTSD.
