I was in the passenger seat when my boyfriend got into an accident on a rainy night. We were both rushed to the hospital after the paramedics had arrived.My boyfriend got plastic surgery on his lip and was released a few hours later. I had to stay over night and had nerve damage in my knee and soft tissue injury.
After about a year and a half, our attorney got us a settlement of $120,000 plus coverage on all medical bills. This was in 1987. We were thrilled. We were a couple of 20 year olds and that was a heck of a lot of money to us.
The one thing that he did say that sort of bugged me was, "Lori, if you were the one who got her lip injured, you all would have gotten a lot more money. A girl's appearance is worth a lot more than a boy's."
