Here is what one parent replied, when asked what she looks for when
considering buying a baby car seat:
"The first thing that I search for when purchasing a baby car seat
is that it has a base that stays in the vehicle and a separate
seat/carrier that is removable. This allows the baby to stay in the seat, yet
be removed from the vehicle. This is really handy because then the seat
can click into a shopping cart."
"The second important thing is to make sure that there is a U shaped
cushion to go around the baby's head which keeps the head stable and
upright. My little boy used to always fall asleep in the car so this was
really important."
"Weight of the infant car seat is also an important consideration. The
combined weight of the baby and the car seat can get pretty heavy by
the time the baby has almost outgrown it."
"Price is also an important consideration. I always try and buy car seats when they are on sale. Name brands such as Eddie Bauer and
Graco are also nice items to look for because you can rely on their
years of experience."
"Another nice feature is to have a zip up bag attached to the seat for
the winter. You can put blankets inside it to keep the baby warm and
you don't have to worry about them blowing away in the winter wind."
"Since cars seats have a strap that clicks in front of the
baby's chest, you want to ensure that it is easy to get on and off. You
don't want to be fiddling with it, making someone wait for you to get baby
out."
